SUMMARY:Markham Village Indigenous Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Alan Colley from Toronto Aboriginal Eco Tours for a three-hour outdoor program to learn Ojibway Creation stories and partake in a gratitude circle. The program will start in the green space outside of the Markham Village Library (near Veteran’s Square) at 10 AM\, after which (around 11 AM) we will walk down to the Rouge River for an ecotour to explore our relationship with nature. Colley will introduce attendees to Indigenous teaching\, including the 7 Grandfather Teachings\, 13 Grandmother Moon Teachings and Medicine Wheel Teachings. \nAll ages are welcome! All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. \nAbout Toronto Aboriginal Eco Tours and Alan Colley:\n“My goal is to bring together our beautiful community in a way that allows elders\, adults\, youth and children to connect and make a difference with actions based on the ground principles of the 7 Grandfather Teachings\, 13 Grandmother Moon Teachings and Medicine Wheel Teachings. I am looking forward to sharing information regarding history\, the plants\, the animals\, the fish and the insects so that we can start looking at a healthy future that we are planting seeds for in the present. Every time a participant resonates with a teaching provided on our tours\, the Indigenous knowledge of my ancestors and the ancestors of all Aboriginal peoples is honored because it has a chance to expand into future generations. Those who had no idea of the sustainable lifestyles and understanding that the First Peoples of what is now Toronto had\, can carry with them a new connection to the natural world they live in – even if it is surrounded by a concrete jungle. DESCRIPTION:Longing Belonging\,100 Years 100 Stories opening reception at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham. \nCome out to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham on Saturday\, May 13\, and celebrate the opening of Longing Belonging\,100 Years 100 Stories curated by Long Time No See. This free public event will feature a ceremonial lion dance performance\, artist tours\, refreshments\, and more. \nLong Time No See is a collective of friends\, artists and educators\, is very interested in the untold stories of identity\, place\, traditions and people in community. Central to our work is the notion of Belonging. Centred in Toronto\, we strive to honour our ancestors by sharing and teaching the stories of how Chinatown came to be\, the histories that have been erased\, and our responsibilities to act in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. \nOver the last few decades immigration has increased to suburban areas: Scarborough\, Markham\, Richmond Hill\, while bypassing the older downtown Chinatowns. How have diasporic communities shaped their sense of belonging in these newer communities? \nPresented by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Ontario Arts Council\, the Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham\, and the City of Markham. \n
